Relevant old stories were 301 redirected to the lead
story. Eg, ‘Michael Jackson may be dead’ and ‘Michael Jackson believed to be dead’ stories from the same day were redirected to the lead
story. Putting links to the now redirected old stories on the home page made sure that Google passed all their link power to the new lead
story. I feel that the tribune may be the only one - what with the rest scrambling to put up pay walls
